Dominator Standings.... (no Barfbados) End of May!
End of May, and we can see trends starting to form. The top 20 is fiercely competitive especially for places 10-20, with 40 points separating 20th and 10th. Further up the battle for 2nd changes nearly every meeting, but Chris Bradbury is now pulling away with a lead of over 350 points...Wagner Green and Moodie looks like developing into something big too....
Further down and ones to watch is James Thackra (324) who is pushing up the league and Oliver "Jaguar" Skeels (124) the mini convert in the Polley car, is already 81st after 6 meetings. Lord Speak of Tyldsley (218) is also now in the Top 100.

Ding ding!.... St Day 29/5/11
An extremely large crowd turned up at the United Downs Raceway in potential conditions to make Peter Kay's dinner lady shout "it's spitttting, get em in iiiiiiit's spittting". However the combined rain dances of the Moss' failed to materialise, and 24 cars in the pits, a really good turn out considering the Bristol clash.
Heat 2 saw much of the same, Simon Bassett cursing his luck again, and it was the Flying Fish, Justin Fisher who took up the running from Chris Rowe (76) now in his new Motorworld. As his back panel now states "join the dark side and get a free cookie". Not sure how busy Mrs Hardings' baking tray, but it certainly seems as the new Harding cars are the mutts nutts, and John should be busy for a while...Initially 1-2-3 for the black Motorworlds, however, as Hooper doubled up, Fisher second (315), and Rowe third (76). Liam Rowe (605) ran third for a fair while and was chasing and catching Fisher, when his prop shaft broke off. Justin was then awarded membership to the prestigious order of the pringle....
Heat 1 started a lively affair with Luke Thomas (916) and Simon Bassett (31) getting hooked up in the top bend, bringing a complete restart. The early breakaways appeared to be from the downgraded Paul Rice who was looking very lively, but came off worse in a blue top battle. This allowed the current top man in the Westcountry, Neil Hooper (676) to take a near faultless win, and booked himself a meeting with our Shannon, seeing that he moaned about missing out last time!
Hoops supes, and a rare Jho pic as Natty Lamp was having camera issues |
With no Hooper for the 3rd heat, and a steadier start for Fisher, who cruised to his first heat of the day, and much barracking again from Nelly, meant another cuddle for Shannon from everyone's favourite Fish....Liam Rowe (605) recovered the prop mishap and finished a close second. Although he recovered from smoking out all the marshalls in his bus.
With the final in bone dry conditions, it was set to go. After an aborted start, early running was set by Luke Thomas (916). Neil Hooper (676) signalled his intent by dispatching both fellow reds Liam Rowe (605) and John Dawe (907). After a few yellows for the hapless Simon Bassett (again) and for Ashley Rundle (116), meant it was a shoot out between Motorworlds and heat winners. Hooper pulled rank and took the win from Fisher, an impressive Jay Tonkin (290) in third, and fellow clay country citizen Dale Moon (302) in fourth.
The GN was again a lively affair. Simon Bassett (31) proved that perserverance prevails, finally getting some luck that he has been showing, Fisher then doubled up by taking the GN, followed home by Bassett, and Liam Rowe in third, who then swapped his Tooz for his Darleyford Transport bus...it probably had a life before hand transporting me to Young Farmers discos back in the day!
The Bangers Cornish championship provided some entertainment, and the slowest painstakingly brutal Bus DD (incidently won by the Radnor Red Top Rowe) had the swelling crowd in raptures.
Still couldn't hear any commentary. Was it a better meeting than Bristol, I don't know, but the support made up for it.....

The Ecclestone Series....
Inspired by the musings of powerful elderly midget, Bernie Ecclestone (not Billy Batten ), who to liven up Formula 1 has had some mad cap and slightly bonkers ideas. However the medal idea that he had after Lewis won the title to liven things up a bit.
I've taken the medal idea and awarded a gold to the top scorer, a silver to the 2nd and a bronze to the 3rd highest.....
This table looks a fairer reflection on winners...
So... in a true Steve Rider style at the end of Olympic Grandstand, lets have a look at the Medal table as it stands - after Knockhill....

Bunter (left) shows the scrunched up fixture list to Messrs Carter and Rosevear |
Last year we saw the first fixture clash for over 20 years in the Westcountry. The May Day Bank Holiday meeting saw St Day and Bristol clash which baffled all. The last clash was also a May Day Bank Holiday, with Newton Abbot and Mendips clashing, with turn just over 20 car turnouts. So, last May Day saw 21 cars at St Day, and 22 at Bristol. Both meetings were very "going through the motions", St Day probably more suited to a smaller turnout than the Cheddar track.
Drivers were split, fans were split - despite drawing from the same resources, 2 sub standard meetings.
Now for the past 20 years, fixtures had been agreed and sorted out between 3 promotions, as Taunton and Newton Abbot had to jostle- and often 2 meetings on one day, Smeatharpe in the afternoon, the Racecourse in the evening.
So why have Autospeed challenged the custodians traditional Bank Holiday Sunday meeting, and once again clashing with the Mendips. We've had no meetings for 3 weekends, and then another 3 weeks until we race again. Yup the bank holidays took a lot out of us, but really is there any need for this gap? What happened to the first Sunday in the month being a St Day also? A St Day or a Bristol last weekend would have worked, and wouldn't have hurt anyone...
It's the Devonians that will be, in the words of Karen Carpenter, "torn between two lovers". Where do I go?Which will be the better meeting? What if I miss a classic? Surely, these people would have gone to both if they were on, so not only would there be more cars if there was only one, it would have been better attended.
Current optimistic estimates give turnouts of around 25, with the Cornish based drivers staying about, and Bristol being reliant on getting passing trade from Birmingham en route to the Bank Holiday Taunton.
To bring it full circle, the added attraction/gimmick for this weekends St Day - bus racing. You wait 12 months for a bus to come along- then 6 turn up at once.....

Dominator ----- May 22nd.....
So the Dominator Series is really starting to change every weekend. A weekend of activity or inactivity can have a dramatic effect. Last week's big riser, Neil Hooper (676) has fallen out of the Top 10 - the top 30 is becoming a little shale heavy, but the busy Whitsun weekend should see the tar boys catch up a bit, although in the Westcountry we could potentially see 2 sub 20 turnouts thanks to the St Day/Bristol. I'll address my concerns with the fixtures in another piece later in the week but let's have a look at the old scoreboard.... Brad Chrisbury (886) proves he is the current Martini Man, any time, any place, any where, being a pillar of consistency. Second looks as though its between Goldin Baz (401) and Norelationto Les (606). Whippersnapper Jack (921) is beginning to drift back into the Peleton, as red top scoring becomes harder! With His Gordyness (7) starting to get results south of Hadrian's Wall, it's gearing up.....

Dominator Standings upto 15/5/11 (missing Barford)
So from the first speedweekend, the main beneficiary is 676 Neil Hooper, who had a good weekend on the Fun Coast with a huge jump into the Top 10. Andrew Palmer didn't have a good day at Stoke, and so has dropped, but Our Barry (401) moves into second place.

Have Startrax fallen out of love with F2?
Stoke made a comeback (Courtesy of You ain't Seen Me Right Pics) |
"...However Startrax boss Steve Rees sounded a cautionary note `39 F2's attended last month's open practice session and all left `raving' about the track and new Armco fence. In 2011 we have two experimental dates for the BriSCA class although we have not made any decisions as regards 2012. These two events are very much a learning curve commercially. BriSCA F2 continues to provide superb and high quality action and increasing cars numbers, however our biggest concern is unfortunately crowd attendance - At Coventry for example on the 30th April there was an acceptable spectator attendance, however given over 90 cars entered and a WCQR we were slightly disappointed particularly as a large element of the crowd had come for Bangers. Unfortunately, commercially survival seems dependant on what formula is one with them, BriSCA F1 or Bangers for example which is a real shame for such a great race division. Somehow the formula needs to attract more followers in ' middle England' and encourage perhaps more friends and family. At the last Coventry on the 30th April as an example, with 90 cars present, there were 19 paying passengers via the pit gate whilst 36 1600cc Bangers in contrast produced 89 after driver/mechanic admission.' Rees added `the quality of F2 action provides more than enough for it to theoretically be THE attraction and we are really looking forward to Saturday's show however the longer term will be determined by audience support. Bangers are the core attraction and F2's commercially will as a fact of life have to compete with developing formulae such as Open Rods, Modstox and StoxKarts etc who all contribute significantly to operational costs and bring along a level of their own support. We would hope the sport of BriSCA F2 will enthusiastically get behind Saturdays programme and turn out in numbers thereby securing the future of the race division in 2012.
That said, I am not pessimistic and am just flagging up a concern in so much as we all need to pull together and ensure the formula is supported the best we can all achieve in what are difficult and challenging times. You can ask no more from the drivers who are providing class entertainment, but perhaps sometimes they too might want to look at the terraces when for example BriSCA F1 are not sharing the programme. - It is as simplistic as `numbers'' (from startrax.info)
Now Mr Rees, you potentially are stirring up a hornet's nest. The kind of turnouts that F2's are regularly turning out for you in droves, and without the restrictions on bookings, regular 70/80 car turnouts that those tractor boys only dream about once a year. Such support from the drivers and great racing always guaranteed. You are blessed with a huge driver base.
Unfortunately for you Steve, is that your tracks are in traditonal F1 country. It's like a Rugby Union club opening up in your Rugby League country. Yes F1 draws a crowd, historically it always will be a premier formula, so you run a F2 meeting on its own, then yes you'll get the cars, but its die hards. It is the narrow mindedness of the jealous F1 fans who have seen there sport become regional, whereas the F2 formula is now truly national, even international.
Its the other way round in the F2 heartlands the South West and Scotland, the crowds are there, just the driver base isn't as big, which is again historical. The sport is moving away from its traditional base. I can remember a World Final a few years back where the hype wasn't forthcoming.... "... lets here it for no 79, from Scotland Gordon Mooodie (wooop, holla) beside him is the Master 1 6 7 Biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiilllllll Battten (woop, holla) and who's here supporting 3 2 4 James Thackra (silence)". Nowadays there's more even still its the jocks and pixies who remain the noisiest, but the middle ground is finding its voice ever so slightly. If anything its the other way round... loads of spectators, dwindling car numbers...
So a simple solution if F2 is not "THE" attraction then put them on with the F1's or a multi million banger thing, then we are quite happy to play second fiddle to them. More careful fixture planning would help, were you really expecting a big crowd when one of the big F1 weekends is on at the same time. Promotional work, and the excellent work of Paul Brown and his 4FS empire have proved that thinking outside the box and encouraging more people to try it, in Skegness and places like that. You've had gimmicks like the bloke of Corrie and the former bike bloke of Top Gear (the pre Stig era). It's easy to sell, but not a blinkered F1 fan who needs their eyes opening. When I promoted this site on
So the driving force to get a bigger crowd in tractor country is down to the promoters based there. Hype it up, and if your worried about crowds, try and stay away from bigger draws. Price it reasonably, or have some kind of loyalty card, turn up at 3 F1 meetings get in half price to this F2 and banger meeting.
So what exactly is your agenda? You say they don't draw a crowd - you are one of the biggest promoters for gimmicks and hype, why can't you sell this formula? It is TOO easy to blame the drivers for a lack of crowd, and when you consider that your last two meetings have won plaudits for being brillant meetings with turn outs most tracks would die for.

If you intend to give it the same class as Open Rods and Stock Karts, well good luck, but I don't see 80 car turnouts for them,
perhaps because they "contribute significantly to operational costs". So they pay to race then?.
Is it your intention to lobby Brisca F2 for pay to race? You might meet some hurdles getting that one through
On the other foot the F1 get more comp admissions AND start money! If you want more foot fall, have a discount for family members. It would stop the back of van hiders aswell. Make the meetings more appealing, perhaps give reduced
Dropping F2 from your tracks would kill Shale racing stone dead, taking it back to the bad days of the 90's were only a handful of tracks were available, especially when the shale scene is in such rude health. If this threat is carried out, then the drivers will only look in one direction for blame, and it won't be the fans...
I urge caution and thought, Mr Rees, you may have the "golden" goose, but there is absolutely no need to slaughter the "silver" one just because its not laying at the moment.

Jho's Euro-vision!
Good evening Vienna, Stoxblog calling,
Ahoy there M'hearties, tis Uncle Terry here. Wogan, not George! Its time for the biggest gathering and kitch event known to man. No, not the F1 UK Open Speedweekend at Skegness, although that can be quite camp, it's Eurovision time. Boom bang-a-lations-on-a-string! And now it seems we have a Euro vision of our own from Austria...
So lets see what we presently have...
Technically, we have to classify Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man as foreign tracks, despite being under the Crown! Onchan Park, Nutts Corner and Ballymena, all tracks that we constantly play at and produce a fair amount of F2 drivers, including 2 world champions, Jimmy Murray (410) (ask your grandad) and Ian Thompson Jnr (901)
Holland has since the 1990's and the onset of the HCD, and latterly the Randall, giving us a plethora of competitive Dutch drivers, and multi champions like Toon Schut (H30) and 2005 World Champion Willie Peeters. There have been numerous tracks from the enormous Baarlo to the dirt of Sint Maarten, the Netherlands is here to stay- the following remains huge!
It's low country neighbours is having an influence too. Warneton in Belgium has been a Saloon Stock track in the past, and the travelling exploits of the Bekkers brothers are to be applauded, they even made it to Cornwall in 2009. Germany has produced a fair few drivers in it's time and Ruisbroken which has been a stomping ground of the 'worth. Peter Baer (D92) is a near regular over here, guten tag, and those who remember Rolf Stoffers (351) from the 90's. If speedway venues are going to be the ones, then home of the usual finale for the Speedway Grand Prix, Gelsenkirchen! But it's Germany's closest cousins who have caused a stir recently.
So in the spirit of anschluss, Randall Motorsport descended on the tyrols of Austria. The brainchild of Manfred Stohl, an ex Austrian rally driver, he saw the cars at the NEC, and like what he saw on the stands and in the Live Action Arena, and thought I wanna piece of that! So leaflets were taken, phonecalls exchanged and after a press junket, including a match race against a bike with the Tim Sugden (88) car, the general consensus was it was good. And then they unleashed on the Natschbach-Loipersbach audience, Dennis Middler (641), Andy Palmer (606), Allen Cooper (702), Tom Smart (744) and Simon Farrington (259). The crowd went wild was an understatement, as you can see below....
Although they might need a new fence, one that isn't in need a coat of Cuprinol. Apparently over a dozen Randalls have been ordered and it could really take off!
So where next???
France? I remember a few years ago on Eurosport at the Bercy Arena - "Stock Car Racing European Championship" on a specially constructed shale track, indoors!, no bigger than Mildenhall, and with an amount of cars on track that even Coventry would baulk at! I remember the UK team was led by Richard Hart (ex791, now heavily involved in the heritage scene) and Keith Barber was instrumental in getting it all together. It was a glorfied banger race, with first corner pile ups akin to those of bangers at Bristol in the early '90s 50 cars all in, first corner, err stop!
Of course speedway tracks are often the first places to look for potential new venues. Now seeing how big speedway is in Sweden, I am very surprised that some kind of car racing hasn't joined it. Same with Poland and the Czech Republic, the best speedway riders and tracks come there. Perhaps put Tomaz Gollob, Nicki Pedersen et al in an F2 and see if they love it.
Why stop at Europe.... we know the tractors do well over in New Zealand, and with the help of the ex-pat Alan Skayman (ex177) it looks as though some form of New Zealand form of F2 is getting underway. This group on Facebook proves that its not just Messrs Wainman and Co who might be going down under. For more news about the All Black Land go to the Facebook Group
So if Brisca or Randall Motorsport want me to me to publicize the sport in Ibiza, Dubai or some over hot holiday climate for a month or two on their tab, then be my guest. Sponge can do Siberia, apparently its hotter than Buxton....
And to play us out, here's the only strong Eurovision and stock car connection I can make. 2010's Eurovision Entry for the Netherlands was performed by Sienke Peeters (also known as Willie's daughter!). Unlike her dad though, she crashed out in the semis, no seeded entry in this game. Well not for the Dutch anyhows!
And that concludes the votes from the J-ho jury.
Goodnight, Vienna.....

Although not green and hairy, this F2 is a Kiwi! (from the NZF2 FB Group) |

Dominator Standings upto 9/5/11
So here we go again on my own. Going down the dusty road..... err I'll stop with the Whitesnake there methinks...So another busy weekend if you were hitting along the A45 run. 68 cars at Cov, 51 at NIR, however if you were North of the border, 14 at Cowdie (very disappointing considering it was alongside a half decent saloon field) and 12 at Crimond. I've put in an average amount of dominator points, of course dominator points are acrued by scoring national points, and then the amount of national points scored in a meeting is collated, and the person who scores the most national points is awarded dominator points according to the number of cars present. Top Scorer in a 50 car meeting would score 50 points, 2nd highest then 49, and so on.... This weekend was a resurgence in Chris Bradbury (886)'s dominance on both surfaces, certainly making him one to watch. With the lack of a GN at Cov, it may have hurt his silver roof battle - with second place being occupied by Gordon Moodie (7) - he had an excellent night at Cowdenbeath, national points wise, but top scoring at a 14 car meeting means he only scores 14 points.
If we were to give Bradders' average to Moodie he would still be around 130 points short of Bradbury.
The current Top 50.....

Austrian Adventure.... video!
Now some video action of the Randalls in action over in Austria is at this link . Usually I'd be able to embed it into the site but there is no option to do it. By the way, it's in German!

Sie würden es nicht glauben. Randalls in Österreich!
or You wouldn't beleive it, Randalls in Austria...
I knew my GCSE B in German would come good for something one day.
Rumours abound at NIR's Qualifier today that Randall Motorsport have taken 6 cars over to a speedway track in Austria. Drivers who went over included Dennis Middler (641) and Allen Cooper (702) to do a demonstration at a Speedway event over there
The Speedway promoter and most importantly the crowd loved it. One car even went thru the flimsy wooden fencing, but still the crowd wanted more...
Reports from our sources state that a significant order has been placed by the promoter for some cars. Who knows, we could have a new European hotspot on our hands, thanks to Randall....
Where next? HCD to Poland? RCE to China? Higgy to Devon?
......It means nothing to me,
oooooooooooh Vienna....!!

The Big Interview #3 - 464 Matt Linfield
Our third interview "victim" is a driver who always turns out beautiful self built cars, and is getting areputation as a rain master, the south coast driver Matt Linfield (464).
In the pits at Bristol |
NAME Matthew Linfield
HOMETOWN Southwater
AGE 32
F2 DEBUT Arena Essex WQ 2002
NUMBER 464
PREVIOUS FORMULAE RACED Superstox and Lawn Mowers, I won the World 24 Hour Endurance in 1998 on a Westwood Lawn Bug, like the odd serious Karting Trip too.
CURRENT F2 2 self built cars and Engines, 1 for tarmac and 1 for shale.
HIGHEST GRADE ACHEIVED Red
ACHIEVEMENTS TO DATE Won a few Finals and many heats
SPONSORS Linfield Precision Engineering, GW & G Bridges, Quantum Racing Services, Neil Dunne Welding + More needed, any offers??
NICKNAME..........You will have to give me one as I don't have any!!
FAVOURITE TRACK Eastbourne / Taunton
TRACKS RACED NIR, Birmingham, Taunton, Bristol, Arena Essex, Wimbledon, Eastbourne, Coventry, Ringwood, Bovingdon, Rousbrook (NL) Warneton (B) + more but I cant remember them all
JHo -How did you start in the sport?
Matt- Dad had raced Superstox since 1968, and my Uncle from 1965 until 1988. We have always gone racing and enjoyed it, I was about 3 weeks old when I first went along.
2011 car.... |
Matt- In 1992 Dad started to slow up when Aldershot sadly closed and Wimbledon was tarmac rather than shale, (Dad loved the shale) I don’t think he had the incentive to carry on and a new car was really needed to do so. Steve had a brief go but he was too busy with other commitments within the sport to make a real go of it. In 1998 I had a one off go at Ringwood who ran independent Superstox and loved it! Did a full season the following year in an old HCD once owned by Shawn Bradbury.
JHo- You are certinaly one of the most travelled drivers, as your nearest track is a fair way away, how come you come Brisca when Spedeworth is on your doorstep?
Matt- Yes we do have to travel a lot, other than Arena Essex. They are nearly all 2-1/2 hours or more away. I have 3 Spedeworth tracks within 1 hour. I race Brisca because Spedeworth is too small, 40 drivers all racing each other every week is simply not appealing, you only need to turn up 3 times and you are in the World Final!! How crap is that! I did do 6 meetings in 2001 but as a family we were ill treated by the promotion and we where asked to leave, although spedeworth has changed hands since then I am 100% sure the poisoned DNA will remain and I would never return for these reasons.
Does a bit of shale too... |
JHo -What's it like having a commentator brother! (Steve Linfield, is Autospeed's and Mendip's lead commentator)
Matt- It must be harder for him than me, he has to act professional if win!! And try not to laugh when I crash. You would not know he is my brother behind the mike, he is a true professional and probably the best in the country for F2’s.
JHo- Whats been the best bits so far? Your highlights?
Matt- Won a few finals and heats from the red grade. Beating people with factory cars and expensive engines on a very small budget, My budget is less than most spend on a engine!!
JHo- What else do you want to do want to achieve in the sport?
Matt- I would love to win heat final and Grand national, that would be awesome!
JHo- How can the sport be improved?
Matt- Reduce the costs to make it accessible to the man on the street again. The Yokohama tires are great, you bolt them on and go racing but at some tracks you can get thru a couple a meeting this isn’t cheap if you race every week. But I would rather that than softener any day!! Make every meeting wet so that I can win the National points, World Final........I do love wet weather racing.
JHo- Do you have any thank yous?
Matt- My family, Claire for letting me go out and play in the workshop, Mum for supplying food and for looking after my daughter Ellie at meetings, Steve for coming with me even though he has his own racing commitments and a special thanks to Dad. He puts so much effort in to help get the car ready every time without him I could not race at the moment.
