The Lochgelly Question...

Now when it was announced that the Racewall was coming down, it put fear and trepidation into stock car North of the Border, who for near on 30 years, have been reliant on their weekly fix of Cowdenbeath. However when it came under threat, a new track was sort after, this was Lochgelly. However this currently has split the sport down the middle in Scotland

I spoke to Scottish Stock Cars' webmaster Kevin McQueen to bring us up to speed on the situation...

Looking imperious

New track, same old rain!
In the Outlaw days
"Lochgelly was originally built when Cowdenbeath announced there intention to close and re-develop the land, before the recession kicked in. As Lochgelly was being built though, the information coming from Cowdenbeath changed, and they were no longer looking to close, if anything, they would now 'relocate'.

That obviously put a spanner in the works at Lochgelly so to speak, as they were building counting on Cowdenbeath going, and picking up the pieces from there, and keeping stock car racing in Fife. So, when Lochgelly did finally open, it was seen as competition. Somewhere looking to close Cowdie down.

Cowdenbeath weren't happy, and blocked there membership to the ORCi, Brisca Etc in the early days. Although, the Cowdenbeath name was never officially mentioned. The wording was along the lines of, 'no, due to the recession, but possibly the next year'. That didn't happen neither, and thats when Spedeworth became involved and took Lochgelly under its banner, and basically forcing GMP/ORCi's hand to allow Lochgelly due to the position of power that it holds by the number of tracks it has already.

So, Lochgelly got into the ORCi. But Spedeworth isn't Brisca, so they couldn't flex in getting Lochgelly Brisca status, instead, going the other way to the Spedeworth equivalent.

Lochgelly, if you haven't been, is similar in length to Skegness, but shape of Taunton ish. The track is wide, and there is plenty run off area on the outside off racing line, and the inside of the track. In my opinion, it would have made an excellent brisca track, that could attract visiting drivers, and not cause a lot of damage to the cars.

The Superstox British weekend last year at Lochgelly, was brilliant. The hits were going in big, and every lap, but there was very little 'physical' damage to the cars. The odd puncture, and mechanical failures. Think there was maybe 2/3 cars tractored off the track over the weekend, the rest were pushed, or drove off. There were 34 cars on the track at once as well.

In my opinion, Brisca has missed out on a potential gem of a track, that could have given Scotland a huge boost in terms of F2 racing. but for politics, and stuborness, it appears that it won't become a Brisca track, nor ever hold Brisca Meetings.

The tracks need to work together. Whether its F2, Superstox, Stock Rods, Bangers, Saloons, whatever, they need to communicate, and work with each other, not against, instead of running meetings head to head"

Food for thought, and considering the number of pictures of cars being tested at the Thunder Valley this close season, it certainly would be a great addition to the Brisca fold, and a much needed shot in the arm for the sport in Scotland. Man cannae live on Cowdie alone!

GMP have also responded to the lack of turnouts last year and driver and spectator complaints about excess damage, inner fence, and lack of parking, by announcing a improvement package...

"After a significant consultation period, GMP are happy to announce a new two year capital expenditure programme at the Racewall, Cowdenbeath. Work is due to start in the close season of 2011 and continue in the close season of 2012. Financial resources have been made available to:
    The Racewall, errr Raceplate!?!
  • Replace the inner-fence with marker tyres
  • Resurface the tarmac track
  • Restore the perimeter wall to its original dimensions and reinforce it with steel plate
  • Create a spectator car park in the wasteland area to the west end of the Central Park site and apply for a temporary secondary site access
New investment in the race track and facilities reaffirms GMP’s commitment to the Racewall for the foreseeable future. GMP continue to try to improve the stock car racing experience at the Racewall for both drivers and fans in these difficult financial times."

Good moves, but will they work and be popular - only time will tell.... just over a fortnight to go now!

Workshop Watch 3: Illegitimate Spawn of Workshop Watch

GMP were happy with the new grandstand for people who have been to Lochgelly
So with most garages and workshops at a fevered and frantic state of frenzy, lets have a look at those who've got a crack on...

20 days to season start and well, lets get ready to rumble!

Off to the North East we go, and one time official spokesman for the Barford promotion, Charlie Whitfield's (301) shale shifter. Resplendent in gold, it looks as though Charles is looking to make sure that the gold roof comes with, for a spot of home track glory.
Up to bonnie Scotland, and to Lee Clark (819) who is a member of the McTart racing clan. I'm led to beleive that this chap is a novice, and I'm sure he'll do well, with the support of the sassenach TARTs, he'll be do south before there's independence!
Next up, in a less of a state of readiness is Ryan Catell (904). This too is his shale beast, with an RCE and his dad Andy happily retired, a concerted effort should see young Ryan get up the grades
Now considering this chap doesn't turn 16 til July, this might be a bit keen, but Autospeed  Ministox Points Champion Ryan Hoskin (991) is keen to make an impression like former winners Chris Cuming (ex393) and Rob Batten (ex467). He has the ex Chris Mikkula (522) Randall that he raced with last year. Complete in Steve Hoskin Construction colours, if you live in South East Cornwall you cannot fail to notice their vans and  machinery with the blue stripe. Ryan is certainly looking to set out his stall early doors, with plenty of practice laps, he will be a force in the westcountry.
Certainly the best artwork so far this year comes from Luke Wrench (560). The dragon on the bonnet proves that this beast is ready to rock n roll....

In the news, Neil Hooper's 2011 Harding has ended up in the hands of former stock rod and bangerstox driver Luke Thomas (916) after a change in machinery. Richard Beere (254) has a new Harding Motorworld and son Jamie has inheirited the ex Todd Jones (286) Higman. Ex Hot Rod and Stock Rod Driver Glenn Sanders (734) has the ex Neil Truran Harding.....
So that's it for a while, more news when we get it

I'm just warming up....

Warm up lap music.

The scene setter. Boogity Boogity, lets go racing. That bit of music that gets the adrenaline going. As a veritable wannabe Bruno Brookes and with years of mobile disco, student and hospital radio behind me, I knows what I likes music wise. However, at the tracks, it has been on the whole elevator musak, and now the musak is being pensioned off for Prog Rock? No, no, no....

For years the National Anthem of F2 was "Rinky Dink" by The Johnny Howard Band. Used primarily at Northampton, by the late Bev Greenhalf, it became the anthem for F2 up and down the country.

But the dink has had its day. Where as I am not advocating we should dubstep the dink, we do need something with a bit of oomph. Dave Goddard, in his new position as commentator, decided to run a poll on Allstox on what should be the new warm up lap music.

A cover of a Jean Michel Jaarre track!

So with a multi cultural line up that would befit any Eurovision Song Contest, the Goddard/Wood vote comprised of ex motorsport tunes from the 80's, Ibizian anthems, stadium rock and obscure haircuts.

Sadly for the midlanders for the vote took that of controversial Blue Peter cat naming ceremony.... the storming Sandstorm won the public vote, but it was the dirge of  "Run Like Hell" by Pink Floyd that led the rolling lap...

Hey, Jho, leave Pink Floyd alone. To be honest, they have sold a lot of albums, but on the whole, they were an album band. Run Like Hell, takes an age to get going, and would need a Mendips amount of Restarts to get to the "good" bit. Frankly its dull beyond belief!

Speaking of dullness....Emerson, Lake and Palmer's "Fanfare For The Common Man". Prog rock at its most dramatically awful. Over played, loved by people who long for the heavy days of the 70's, and remain steadfast to change. In the opening, very lively and grabs the attention but at the end, very dull and repitive.Kind of suitable for F1. Very apt in fact!

So...... what do you suggest in alternative Mr Jho..... well there are numerous tracks. The excellent Rob Dougan provides a fair few choices of mine. If you've watched a Matrix film, you'll know him, his are the moody strings, and "Speed Me Towards Death" is famed for being on Top Gear. If like me, you have the F1 2010 game for your game console, you'll be familar of tune - Ian Brown's F.E.A.R - now this is awesome tension building music. Brainbug's "Nightmare" and Energy 52's "Cafe Del Mar" both do the same in a clubby style.

But for me, there is only one tune that I think can do a warm up lap justice.

The epic Knights of Cydonia by Muse. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3Yc3HhSl1Q

Just over the top, brillant guitar riff, and the right amount of pace for when the green flag drops....

...no one's gonna take me alive!

So an appeal to the comm boxes of the land. Time to drop the Dink, but replace with something that doesn't stink.

Workshop Watch 2: The Sequel!

Foxy Loxy's days were numbered as he became roadkill on the A52

So once again, we delve into the various states of panic that has been that have been befitting the various garages up and down the land.

Lovely Loveland
Fresh from its official unveiling at the Ben Fund Do, is the new one of Luke Loveland (120). Luke is one of the biggest fans of the blog, especially during Barfordgate!

A couple of months late, but it looks the danglies
Earlier in the year, this car of Paul Butcher's (189), ended up in the Spray Shop of the "Daddy". and mischievous Liam Rowe tried to pass it off as his own new one. New pics of that one shall be coming by the end of the month, along with brother Ross, complete with out the dreaded cursed green that dogged his form!

Leaving the Randall Camp and heading over to the RCE stable is consistent Westcountry Red Top is Chris Mikkula (522). With signwriting from Sign FX of Worcester (aka James Rogers (544)), it is certainly one of the prettiest cars so far....

Car Crime in Weston Super Mare started to follow Liverpool's infamous  trend
Looks pretty doesn't it - shame to wreck it, what odds will you get for it looking like this after heat one ??

Matt's colour consultant relaxes on a job well done

Over in Sussex, and one time interviewee for the blog, Matt Linfield (464) goes for a break from the white and gives commentator brother Lively something easier to find on the track, bright pink- colour chosen by Matt's daughter!

Other gossip includes, Mike Priddle (14) selling his Motorworld to Rich Swales (162), with a new one coming to the Taunton Tourette-ist - if you've seen his Facebook status, it would make Snoop Dogg cringe!

More gossip and pics to come thick and fast as we enter February and practice days!

Help A Little Lady!

Now reknowned Brisca Babe, Brummie Karen needs our help with a competiton for her calendar
The Bike Insurer are casting girls for their 2012 calendar, and Miss Crane needs our votes

http://www.thebikeinsurer.co.uk/motorbike-girls/calendar-competition/kay-crane/

Here's a few reminders why you should...

2010 and she touches silver

Proof that she needs our support, as without it things will fall out!
Skegness was suprisingly warm for July

She is very charitable - here's her helping out an East Coast Legend!

So vote vote vote- it will save me from earache!

Polley Vision!

Everyone's favourite love to hate or hate to love driver, Dave Polley (38) has been always good for a quote. He's the current star of 2 Youtube Interviews - one with Brisca F2 TV, with Lively Linfield and one for Uncle Cyril's Barford Raceway (As an aside, all good in the Barford hood, they have returned to the flock)

Question is, who rattled his cage in between the two interviews....

And this interview is hilarous because 1. He pulls no punches 2. The Vicar thinks he's actually going to driver a tractor and not the F1 that DP is mentioning and 3. He just doesn't give a monkeys what he says or who he upsets! Legend!

Still a great idea of having a youtube account- it works and is an excellent channel!

Bev Greenhalf and Les Eaton

Two pioneers of our sport have passed away, leaving a legacy that we can all look back in merriment at.

Bev GREENHALF

Sad news from the Midlands as the voice of F1 Stock Car, commentator Bev Greenhalf, passed away a few weeks ago.

For me he will be remembered as the voice of my away days at Northampton, combined with the tones of "Rinky Dink" - the tune that is now a piece of the furniture of F2.

The consummate professional, rarely flustered, and even learnt, and then commentated in Dutch, he was a pioneer for the sport. A strong link for Anglo/Dutch relations, he probably is responsible for the strong relations and presence at now grace Holland, having commentated at numerous venues up and down the country,

Despite scaling back his commentary duties and being an excellent mentor to all the commentators that have since took residence in the comm boxes up and down the land, Bev was truly THE voice of the sport.

Les EATON

One of the forefathers of the sport of Stock Car in the early days. The Godfather of Spedeworth, Les Eaton, passed away today. Like Redmond, Parker and Dommett, he took the sport from its birth and sew the seeds of the modern day formula that we know today. Sadly, the acrimonious split in 1961 that saw Eaton go his separate ways from Brisca, and promoted at Arlington and Aldershot, under the guise of the "The Formula Two Stock Car Company". Towards the end of the decade, the company was renamed Spedeworth, and during the 70's went of forays into Europe, at Ruisbroken and Warneton, when F2 racing was struggling to get out of the Westcountry! Despite the percieved bitter feud between Spedeworth and Brisca which gave near carbon copies of each of the formula. Spedeworth did its thing in the South and East (and to a lesser extent at Cowdenbeath during the 70's and 80's), whilst Brisca took the rest.

The Spedeworth that Les Eaton leaves behind is now in one of the strongest powers, if not the, in the UK oval racing scene. Yarmouth, Aldershot, Eastbourne, Wimbledon, Hednesford, Birmingham, Northampton and now Lochgelly, it is certainly in rude health.

Those who are worried about the perceived influence of the current Spedeworth grand fromage Deane Wood on the ORCi will be urged to remember that Spedeworth created a lot of the formulae that are the mainstay of the ORCI. The Saloon Stox and Mini Stox both were both creation and now are perfect bed fellows for the main formula we love.

The Heaven Raceway's Race Control just got that bit more stellar tonight.

Race in peace, lads.
